Recruiting Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII adds a brooding former Turk with powerful long-range attacks and unique transformation abilities to your party. Unlocking this classic optional party member requires exploring the ominous Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim. By solving a specific safe combination puzzle and navigating the mansion's dark basement, you can wake Vincent from his slumber and convince him to join your journey.
Locating the Safe in Shinra Mansion
To begin the recruitment process, head to Nibelheim and enter the Shinra Mansion. Make your way to the second floor and locate the safe sitting inside the room on the left side. Opening this safe requires entering a precise four-number combination within a strict 20-second time limit.
Turn the dial to Right 36, Left 10, Right 59, and Right 97 without overshooting any of the numbers. If you make a mistake or run out of time, you will have to restart the lock sequence from the beginning. Successfully unlocking the safe immediately triggers a mandatory battle against the formidable boss known as Lost Number.
Defeating Lost Number and Obtaining the Basement Key
The encounter with Lost Number can be challenging, as the boss physical and magical capabilities split depending on your attacks. Utilizing status-inflicting abilities like Stop or Paralysis helps mitigate the damage your party takes during the fight. Focus on your strongest physical or magical damage to defeat the creature swiftly.
Once Lost Number is defeated, the safe yields the Odin Materia alongside the crucial Basement Key. Claiming this key is necessary because it unlocks the heavy door located in the subterranean levels of the mansion. With the key in hand, head back down toward the secret basement passage.
Waking Vincent in the Crypt
Proceed through the basement corridor until you reach the locked door leading into the crypt room. Inside, approach the purple coffin in the center and interact with it to speak with Vincent Valentine. When prompted during the conversation, choose to speak to him about Sephiroth to catch his interest.
After he closes the lid and returns to sleep, interact with the coffin a second time and ask for his name. Vincent will eventually tell you his name before going back to rest. Once you finish the conversation, turn around and begin walking out of the crypt room toward the mansion stairs.
Finalizing Vincent's Recruitment
As you exit the basement area, Vincent will stop your party and decide to join your group to track down Sephiroth. He joins at a level relative to your current party average, wielding handguns from the back row. Having Vincent in your active roster unlocks unique story dialogue and special cutscenes as you progress through the game.
